McConnell’s Wichita Street is set to be demolished and repaved starting November 9, 2022.

Seventy years after the original concrete was laid, McConnell has been awarded funding through a $5.3 million Multiple Award Construction Contract, with a 365-day contract period. The scheduled completion date is July 24, 2023.

McConnell’s 22nd Civil Engineer Squadron started planning the project in 2020 after a poor pavement condition report in 2018. The project will repair the current damage and prevent rapid deterioration in the future, which would require larger and costlier repairs.

The pedestrian bridge will be closed throughout the duration of the project and Wichita Street will be closing in three phases to minimize the disruption of normal traffic flow.

“I tell our teams all the time that future Air Force members stationed at the base, 40 years from now, will still reap the benefits of our actions today,” said Col. Nate Vogel, 22nd Air Refueling Wing commander. “Lead on, Engineers! We’re making a difference!
