Public comment: McConnell facility improvements

McConnell AFB invites the public to comment on a facility improvement project June 17 through July 16.

The Air Force is preparing an environmental assessment for construction of a new combat arms training and maintenance facility at McConnell AFB. The need for this action is the result of deficiencies in the current facility, including inadequate ventilation and noise control, the isolated location and ease of access to emergency personnel, and the current CATM facility is nearing the end of its expected lifespan.

The construction project is subject to Executive Order 11988, Floodplain Management, requirements and objectives because a portion of the project location is within a flood zone. The area to be disturbed during construction activities would be approximately 3 acres. Prior to initiation of construction activities, required permits would be obtained, including a Construction Site Storm Water National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit with an associated Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan. Measures identified as part of the NPDES permit and SWPPP would minimize potential impacts to surface water quantity and quality.

The Air Force requests advance public comment to determine if there are any public concerns regarding the project’s potential impacts. The Air Force would also like to solicit public input or comments on potential project alternatives. The proposed project will be analyzed in a forthcoming EA and the public will have the opportunity to comment on the draft EA when it is released.

The public comment period is June 17, 2018 – July 16, 2018. Please submit comments or requests for more information to Ms. Kristi Draney, CATM Project Manager, via e-mail (kristi.draney@us.af.mil) or by standard mail to: 22 CES/CEIE Attn: Kristi Draney, 57830 Pittsburg Street, Suite 120, McConnell AFB, KS 67221.
