931st commander issues Independence Day message Published July 3, 2013 By Col. Mark S. Larson 931st Air Refueling Group Commander MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. -- It was 237 years ago when a group of men gathered together in Philadelphia and courageously signed their names on a Declaration of Independence, establishing the United States as a free and independent nation and giving birth to the great country we share today. Today, those of us who serve in the military pay tribute to these first patriots each time we put on the uniform of our nation. It is our distinct honor and privilege to defend the ideals of liberty and freedom set forth on that July day so many years go. As we celebrate our nation's birthday this week, let us take time to remember the countless men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice so that we may continue to live in freedom. It is only through their sacrifice that the United States continues to be the greatest nation on earth. Let us also remember our brothers and sisters who are serving in harm's way around the world, as well as their loved ones, and keep them in our thoughts. Please enjoy the holiday to the fullest and take pride in celebrating the birthday of our nation. We in the 931st are fortunate to live in an area where our local communities are so incredibly supportive of the military, and they will be sharing with us as we celebrate this holiday. Remember to be good ambassadors as you are out interacting with community members this weekend, and remember to thank them for their support. And as always, keep safety in mind in all things. Make sound decisions and look out for one another. I wish you a very safe and happy Fourth of July!
