HRDC seeks assistance working concession stands

The 931st Air Refueling Group Human Resources Development Council is seeking volunteers to work concessions during sporting events and concerts.
According to Tech Sgt. Miranda Beyer, Flight Scheduler, 18th Air Refueling Squadron, working concessions offsets the cost of many events the group sponsors.

"The reason we volunteer is to supplement money for events like Family Day," said Beyer. "By working concessions at local events, we don't have to ask members to chip in financially."

From Dec. 2009 to Dec. 2010, HRDC provided more than $3150 to support the purchase of food and gifts for Airmen at 15 931st ARG events, including the unit's Family Day picnic, the annual children's Christmas party, Community College of the Air Force graduations, and monthly breakfasts for newcomers during unit training assemblies.

The 931st ARG HRDC provides volunteers to work concession stands at concerts and sporting events once or twice per month. HRDC receives $40 per volunteer. Concession stands usually require six to eight workers.

In order to work an event, members must complete a free, two-hour food handler's class at the Wichita Health Department as required by local ordinance, and additional training required by the arena.

More than 200 Air Reserve Technicians and Traditional Reservists, about one third of the group, live in the Wichita area, but only 23 members have completed the required training.

"We see a lot of the same faces volunteering," said Beyer.

"Lots of people have time to volunteer," said Master Sgt. Rachael Forrest, President, 931st ARG HRDC. "You are worth $40 to come out and work one event. If members have time to volunteer, they should come out. If not, they should be prepared to contribute $40."

Senior Master Sgt. Pamela Summers, Superintendent, Education and Training, said there should be no shortage of assistance to work events, "If we could get everyone who lives in the local area to work one event per year, we would have enough volunteers to cover every event."

The 931st ARG HRDC also has openings in several committees, and is seeking Airmen to fill vacancies on the council. All 931st ARG Airmen are encouraged to participate.
