Air Force to turn 64 Published Sept. 16, 2011 By Brannen Parrish 931st ARG Public Affairs MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. -- Airmen around the world will celebrate the 64th birthday of the Department of the Air Force, Sept. 18. President Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947 on Sept. 18, establishing the Air Force as a military department under civilian control. Earlier today, Secretary of the Air Force Michael Donley, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz and Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James Roy issued the following message to the Airmen of the United States Air Force: On September 18, 1947, our nation established the United States Air Force, thus realizing our forebearers' vision of an independent air service to provide global airpower for the nation. Our proud organization has come a long way since that historic and auspicious occasion. Today, America's Airmen continue to build upon a tremendous heritage of integrity, service, and excellence. On this -- and every -- day, we express sincere gratitude for your service and sacrifice and that of your families. Your dedication to mission and devotion to duty are unparalleled in equal measure to the full range of vital air, space and cyber capabilities that we provide to our joint and coalition teammates and to the nation. As we work together in building an even brighter tomorrow, please join us in proudly celebrating the 64th birthday of the United States Air Force. As always, we sincerely thank you and your families for all that you do. Col. William H. Mason, Commander, 931st Air Refueling Group encouraged 931st ARG members to contemplate the deeds and accomplishments of Airmen who have served. "The 64th birthday of the Air Force provides an opportunity for the Airmen of the 931st Air Refueling Group to reflect on just how far we have come as an individual service," said Mason. "It's a time for us to remember the struggles and triumphs of the past, even as we adapt and press on to meet the challenges of the future. September 18 is a significant day for Airmen across the entire spectrum of our service."
