Spirit Spotlight: Staff Sgt. Amanda Mitchell Published Feb. 25, 2011 By Tech Sgt. Kimberly Herrell 931st MXS, Nondestructive Equipment MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. -- Her Supervisor Says: Staff Sgt. Amanda Mitchell joined the 931st Maintenance Squadron just over a year and a half ago as a young Senior Airman. She jumped in with both feet, accepting orders for an extended period of time to assist the Nondestructive Inspection shop while working directly with the active duty. After working to merge the shops, she volunteered for a four-month deployment to Southwest Asia. While deployed, she secured a full time Air Reserve Technician position with the unit. Upon returning from the deployment she jumped back in the swing of things, assisting with the move to a new shop. Sergeant Mitchell has continued to be a great asset to the Air Force Reserve and takes on all needed responsibilities including additional duties as a physical training monitor. Unit: 931st MXS Month & Year you joined the Air Force: February 2005 Month & Year you joined the 931st: November 2009 Hometown: Wellsville Ohio Military Job: Nondestructive Inspection Technician Civilian Job: Nondestructive Inspection Air Reserve Technician Preferred Movie Genre: Mystery, I have always been interested in Forensics and the way things unfold through science. I like the thrill of suspense and exercising my brain to figure out the possibilities of the story line before it ends. Preferred Books, Fiction or Nonfiction: Nonfiction, I enjoy being able to relate with stories that have actually taken place. Learning about different perspectives, and of particular times in history from various cultures and parts of the world. Transporation: Car, eventually I plan to have a Subaru Legacy like the one I owned in Japan. At the moment it's nice to own a car that gets me to and from that is paid off. Gas is cheaper these days for cars as well. Favorite Sport: Track and Field Sport I like least: Basketball Favorite Team: Pittsburgh Steelers Team I like least: Dallas Cowboys If I won or inherited a large sum of money I would pay off my house and help my family pay off debt. Any leftover would go to Charity and I would continue to work every day because I like my job and the people that I work with and this unit. I am most proud of being the only female in my family to be in the military. Both of my brothers were in the military, four cousins and both grandfathers. I have had a lot of great influences. The area of my life, personality that makes me most unique is my ability to pick up and travel anywhere life takes me, and have a positive outlook on it. No matter where I go, either tropical or desert, I look at the situation as a chance to learn and meet new people. The Air Force has blessed me. One area of my life I most want to improve is public speaking. So often what I think in my head and what and how it comes out of my mouth are two very different things. Having the confidence to speak professionally to my peers would be a great accomplishment for me.
