Three-day Kaw Pow Wow starts Friday

  • Published
The Kaw Nation Intertribal Pow Wow, an annual event, is scheduled to begin Friday in Kaw City, Okla.

The 931st Air Refueling Group adopted the Kaw Nation, a sovereign Native-American tribe, soon after it stood up here in 1995. Like its home state of Kansas, the 931st ARG draws its identity from the tribe's proud Kanza people.

"Kanza" is the official call sign for 931st ARG KC-135 Stratotanker missions and a depiction of a Kanza roach, a headdress worn by warriors and dancers, has been incorporated into many forms of 931st decorations.

The Pow Wow, located 1/2 mile west of the Washunga Bay entrance of Kaw Lake, continues through Aug. 2 and is open to the public. Click here for a flyer that includes event times and other information.
