Communty service recognized
Col. Mark S. Larson, commander of the Air Force Reserve 931st Air Refueling Group, McConnell Air Force Base, Kan., presents a framed certificate of appreciation to Senior Airman Ryan McPartland, 931st Maintenance Squadron, prior to a Group staff meeting, Feb. 27, 2013. Larson recognized McPartland for outstanding community service during severe snowstorms that had dumped more than 14 inches of snow on the area during the previous week. McPartland had voluntarily shoveled the sidewalks of his apartment complex the day after the storm so that residents of the apartments could make their way to their vehicles. Contrail tale
A type of contrail usually seen at higher altitudes forms soon after a KC-135 Stratotanker flown by an 18th Air Refueling Squadron crew takes off from McConnell Air Force Base on Sept. 13. A contrail (short for condensation trail) can form at low altitudes when air hits a moving wing surface in very humid conditions. Consecutive days of rain that ended on Sept. 13 made 2008 the second-wettest year on record for the area around McConnell. (U.S. Air Force photo/Tech. Sgt. Jason Schaap)

Contrails from the dome
Contrails stream from the radar dome of an E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) as it closes in on the refueling boom of a KC-135 Stratotanker assigned to McConnell Air Force Base, Kan., during an evening air refueling training exercise, March 30, 2015. The KC-135 was operated by an aircrew made up of Air Force Reservists assigned to the 18th Air Refueling Squadron, 931st Air Refueling Group, at McConnell. The E-3 is equipped with a 30-foot rotating radar dome that contains a radar subsystem that permits surveillance from the Earth's surface up into the stratosphere, over land or water. The radar has a range of more than 250 miles (375.5 kilometers). The radar combined with an identification friend or foe, or IFF, subsystem can look down to detect, identify and track enemy and friendly low-flying aircraft by eliminating ground clutter returns that confuse other radar systems.
