Then and now: Air Force basic military training

Sept. 18, 1947, the Air Force formed into a separate department and the land that would eventually become today’s Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland was part of Kelly Field and used as a bombing range in the 1930’s. In 1938, Brig. Gen. Frank D. Lackland called for an expansion of training at Kelly to incorporate the area known as “the Hill.”
