Derby AFJROTC Visit, Oct 2008

The cadets' school, Derby High School in Derby, Kan., is less than 10 miles from McConnell. Senior Master Sgt. Ray Lewis, a boom operator from the 931st Air Refueling Group, Eli Stambaugh, Taylor Stephenson and Nate Fowler unload bricks to line a disc golf tee box, April 19. Stephenson is redesigning the disc golf course at McConnell Air Force Base, Kan., as part of his Eagle Scout project through the Boy Scouts. Stephenson, who is the son of Master Sgt. Johnny Stephenson of the 931st ARG, enlisted the help of fellow scouts, JROTC cadets from Derby High School and 931 ARG Airmen. Distinguished Gentlemen
Majors Michael Moeding and Marco Moor were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for their actions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The Majors along with an active duty boom operator, Staff Sgt. Christopher Murphy recovered the KC-135R Stratotanker while flying a refueling mission over Southwest Asia. Sergeant Murphy received an Air Medal for his actions.

Doc the Superfortress
Doc, a B-29 Superfortress, is parked in a hangar June 2, 2021, at McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas. After regaining airworthiness in June of 2016, the aircraft conducted its first flight after restoration July 17, 2016. Doc the Superfortress
Doc, a B-29 Superfortress, sits in a hangar June 2, 2021, at McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas. Doc was first found by Tony Mazzolini in 1987 in the China Lake, Cal. where it was being used as a target for bomb training.
